Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 2 – All the best United GIF Moments
Manchester United were knocked out of this seasons Champions League after a 3-2 defeat on aggregate to Real Madrid. The Reds lost 2-1 on the night at Old Trafford but the game was overshadowed by a terrible refereeing decision to send off Nani after 55 minutes.
The pre match started with a shock as Wayne Rooney was dropped to the bench and Nani was given a surprise start on the left wing. Ryan Giggs started on the right to help deal with Real’s danger side and Danny Welbeck was given the vital role of playing behind Robin van Persie.
The first half was an intriguing battle of nerves, and spurred on by a stunning Old Trafford atmosphere, United overcame theirs and looked the better team. Danny Welbeck was doing a brilliant job in shackling danger man Xabi Alonso as well as offering a potent threat on the counter with his pace and directness. Ryan Giggs, starting in his 1,000th senior appearance continued to defy logic putting in a a brilliant shift from defence to attack.
United went into half time 0-0, leading the tie on away goals and on top of the game.
It got better, after 48 mins the Reds took the lead. After some nice build up play led to United going close, Nani stole possession inside the Madrid box and crossed to Welbeck who’s slightest touch resulted in Sergio Ramos scoring in his own net.
The game was turned on its head on 55 minutes. Nani looking to control the ball in mid-air caught the oncoming Álvaro Arbeloa. The free kick was given and after waiting for Nani to get back to his feet, the referee stunned Old Trafford and the millions watching at home by showing him a red card.
Real seized the moment and scored 2 very good goals via Luka Modric and that boy Ronaldo.
To United’s credit the remainder of the game saw them put their heart and soul into the game as they looked for a way back into it. It was not to be.

1. Michael Carrick & Robin van Persie passes, Danny Welbeck attacks
Carrick plays a nice ball into Robin van Persie who after a neat turn plays in Danny Welbeck who’s directness and pace caused Real problems all night.
2. Ryan Giggs cross
The play above led to this gorgeous cross by Ryan Giggs with the outside of his left boot. It finds Van Persie at the back post who in hindsight may wish he had put his laces through it.
3. Ryan Giggs Pass
Ryan Giggs plays this gorgeous first time pass into Rafael’s nice run. He goes down a little too easy for a penalty to be awarded but his attacking intent was classic Rafael.
4. Robin van Persie Touch
Stunning control by RVP as he controls a long high ball. He then finds that man Welbeck again who is straight at their defence once more.
5. Michael Carrick Pass, Patrice Evra Skill
Love this pass by Carrick around the corner to play in Evra whose skill gets the ball past Ramos who then kicks him in the leg. Nailed on penalty for me. Whilst it was late and scoring wasn’t a given, it could have been a frantic last 2 minutes if we had levelled the game.

Really don’t get how Nani’s “tackle” can be a red card, but the keeper doublepunching Vidic in the face is nothing…
And how Evra did not get a penalty is beyond me!
Still hurting since Tuesday night. These .gif’s, however, did put a smile on my face. The players really did us proud and played some terrific football.
You know what makes the red card even more upsetting? The fact that if Arbeloa hadn’t gotten in the way of Nani’s boot, we might be celebrating that on this list as Beautifully Red moment displaying Nani’s first touch…
